Time for the changeover: camt.053 is coming

MT940 is switched off

The MT940 account turnover format for posted account statements will be switched off in Germany in November 2025 and replaced by the ISO20022-based camt.053 format in version 8. This marks the dawn of a new era in payment transactions: The CAMT.053 format will become the new standard – an important step in the context of SEPA version 3.7.

If you import and post bank statements automatically in your Portolan accounting software, now is the time to take action. Without a timely changeover, there is a risk of interruptions in payment transactions and manual rework.

How does camt differ from MT940?

While MT940 was still a simple text file with fixed record structures, camt is an XML format that is now the standard for data exchange between systems. The format is characterized by a high degree of flexibility and variability. It also offers new possibilities that will certainly be used more and more by banks over time.

Important changes due to camt.053

  • The previous transaction code is no longer used.
Instead, the new Bank Transaction Code will be introduced, which consists of three levels (Domain, Family.Code, Subfamily.Code).
A direct 1:1 transfer of the previous codes is not possible.
  • Your account statements can be enriched with the new information – for greater transparency and evaluability.
  • The camt format is XML-based and complies with the current ISO 20022 standards – for greater efficiency and compatibility.

The solution for DCW users

DCW can read and process the new format. However, you need at least a PTF version from October 2024 for this. As the experience of the first active users of the new camt version has resulted in adjustments to the programs, we recommend that you request a new PTF version from us as soon as possible. This is very easy to do via our new Portolan ticket system, which you can access at https://ccc.portolancs.com/.

Important: You can also use both formats in parallel. If one bank has already switched to camt, but another is still supplying MT940, this is no problem in DCW!

What needs to be considered when setting up?

We use our so-called XML framework to process the camt files. After installing the PTF, you must therefore load the structures into DCW. This process is carried out manually via the corresponding DCW menu items and is described in detail in the documentation that we provide on our homepage. In addition to loading the XML schemas, tables must also be set up and file paths created and assigned. This is also described in the documentation. However, you can rest assured that the existing data will be retained, especially the data that helps to allocate open items or determine accounts. The transition should therefore take place without any frictional losses.

Of course, you can also commission us to set it up for you. We usually need a maximum of one hour for this.

What will change for users?

We have decided to use different menu items for importing account statements in the different formats.

There are separate entries in the “Electronic Banking” menu for filling the work file and transferring the account statements. Once the transfer has taken place, you can continue processing the statements as usual with “Edit account statement”.

The solution for EVM users

Let us convert your processes to the new camt.053 format together. Our experienced team will support you quickly, securely and reliably.

Importing the camt053 (version 8) account statement format is generally available to EVM users.

The technical requirement for importing the account statement is EVM client version 1.9.17-28 (or higher). Import of the new format is guaranteed from this client version onwards.

Customers with the current release 8.60 and fix version F037 also have the option of displaying the Bank Transaction Code (BTC) in plain text or deriving the business transaction code (GVC) from the BTC. You will receive a preconfigured derivation for this which can be adapted to the company’s requirements if necessary.

A significant number of EVM customers are already using the new format. Secure your consultation appointment now. Portolan will accompany you through the changeover as a competent partner – personally, bindingly and reliably.
