Die Zeit ist reif für einen Wechsel: Bye-bye CSV – Hallo moderne Datenwelt auf der IBM i
Many companies are familiar with it: the use of outdated formats such as “.csv” or “.txt” files with all their known weaknesses – such as error-prone integrations, unsuitable formats, incorrectly saved content, duplicate entries, unreadable files, … – can be quite annoying.
Our way: JSON instead of CSV
As part of a customer project, a modern, future-proof solution for the data exchange of incoming and outgoing invoices was implemented on the IBM i.
At the heart of this solution is the use of a defined JSON format in combination with a high-performance Rust web service.
We are thus setting new standards in terms of reliability, security and efficiency.
Why JSON?
- Standardized & structured: JSON is established worldwide, easy to read and excellent for machine processing.
- Error-resistant: In contrast to text or CSV files, JSON minimizes the risk of integration errors.
- Future-proof: A modern interface must be flexible, scalable and secure – characteristics that JSON fully meets.
The solution at a glance
In our project, an end-to-end process was set up for the electronic exchange of invoice data that covers numerous use cases:
- Provision: The data sender creates the invoice data in the defined JSON format.
- Transmission: The data is sent to the IBM i via a clearly defined web service.
- Processing: A specially developed program on the IBM i takes over the processing, preparation and makes the data available in the batch input folder or the digital mailbox of the financial accounting department.
Technology stack
✔ JSON as a standardized exchange format
✔ Rust-based web service for high performance and stability
✔ IBM i as a proven platform for business-critical processes
✔ Batch input session as a target point for further processing in financial accounting
Conclusion: Rethinking data exchange
With this solution, we show how established platforms such as IBM i can be successfully embedded in modern data infrastructures – without compromising on security, performance or flexibility.
Saying goodbye to CSV is not a risk, but a clear step forward.
